Initiative 1030 is a destructive property tax cut scheme that will decimate funding for public services in Washington State.
The initiative, as written, appears to apply to both local and state property taxes, and would gut funding for first responders (police, fire, emergency medical response), schools, libraries, parks, pools, and other critically valuable services by a whopping 30%.
I-1030 THREATENS YOUR FAMILY
DO YOU KNOW WHAT INITIATIVE 1030 WOULD DO?
Initiative 1030's sponsors claim that their proposal will help struggling homeowners by reducing property taxes. This is a lie. Initiative 1030 only hurts all of us. It is a threat to the prosperity and health to EVERY FAMILY in Washington State.
By decimating public services, Initiative 1030 will result in massive layoffs of public employees across the state, resulting in tens of thousands of jobs lost. Teachers, librarians, firefighters, policemen, troopers, parks staff, and countless other public servants would become unemployed, leading to an immediate economic disaster in the state of Washington.
The hit on public services would also mean:
- the closure of schools and the possible merger of school districts, which will mean most children would attend school further away from home;
- the shurttering or sale of parks and pools everywhere;
- reduced library hours and library closures;
- greatly decreased police protection, which means more drunken drivers on the road and sex predators roaming around our communites uncaught;
- greatly decreased fire protection and emergency medical response, which means help may not arrive in time to save an injured family member or put out a fire;
Why are these consequences inevitable? Because our property taxes support the common wealth - the array of public services that we depend on every day for our livelihood and our economy to function.
The common wealth belongs to all of us - it is what gives our communities a great quality of life. If we tear it apart, we will all pay the price. We are only hurting ourselves.
